Can Tartar Be Removed At Home?
You might be aware of plaque, which is a sticky matter that builds up on teeth. If plaque is not removed then it hardens and this hardened form of plaque is called a dental calculus or tartar. Tartar negatively affects the oral health, and that’s why allowing it to develop is never considered a good idea.

What is Tartar?

Tartar can act as a breeding ground for oral bacteria which feeds on sugars received from the food eaten. The bacteria can further form acid which harms the enamel of the tooth, causing dental cavities. Different toxins are also produced by bacteria which cause various gum (periodontal) problems. Various factors cause the plaque buildup, such as:
  • Inappropriate oral hygiene
  • Poor choices of food
  • A bad technique of brushing
  • Heredity
  • Missing professional care
The big question here is – can tartar be removed at home? The answer is that yes, tartar can be removed at home. There are various natural ways which can be followed to remove the tartar at home. However, do note that these could potentially be dangerous, as tartar is extremely hard to take off. In most cases a visit to your dentist is always recommended.

Oil Pulling

Oil pulling is a very old oral health supportive practice and helps in removing the tartar. For oil pulling, extra-virgin coconut oil acts best because it is rich in lauric acid which has antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory effects. This can be practiced daily, in the mornings before consuming anything. Take one tablespoon of this oil and swish it around in the mouth for 15-20 minutes. Then spit it out and remember you don’t have to swallow it or gargle with it. After that, your teeth should be brushed normally.

Aloe Vera

Aloe Vera effectively removes gum diseases produced by tartar. It is antimicrobial and kills plaque buildup causing bacteria. Moreover, it helps in removing bad breath. After extracting the pulp from an Aloe Vera leaf, it should be directly rubbed on the gum line and teeth. After leaving it for 10 minutes, it should be rinsed off with normal water. This remedy can be practiced twice daily.

White Vinegar

With the presence of acetic acid, white vinegar helps in preventing the formation of tartar and demineralization of enamel. You should combine 2 teaspoons of white vinegar and 1 teaspoon of salt in ½ cup warm water. This mixture can be used to rinse the mouth one or two times every day.

Preventive Measures

Some preventive measures you can take to avoid the buildup of tartar are:
  • Properly brush your teeth.
  • Fluoride toothpaste can be used.
  • Tartar control toothpaste can also be used.
  • Chewing Sesame Seeds prevents tartar buildup.
  • Electronic toothbrush helps in preventing tartar buildup.
Don’t try removing tartar at home if you are unsure. Additionally, if tartar has accumulated over the years, it could be nearly impossible to remove them with traditional methods and would require a dentist intervention. Call your local dentist today and they would love to help you out.
